Ballista was one of the dragons living at the [[Pen Y Fan Breeding Grounds]], where she acted as chair of the [[Dragon Council]].  She was initially rather condescending to [[Temeraire]] and persistently mispronounced his name, but she began to treat him with more respect after he demonstrated the [[Divine Wind]] for the Council.

Ballista lived in an English breeding ground. Though she could not quite pronounce his name properly, she followed [[Temeraire]] to war. She was known to use her barbed tail to dig trenches in the ground for the army.  
 
 
Ballista left the breeding grounds to fight Napoleon's invading troops in Temeraire's regiment. She used her barbed tail not only as a weapon but also to dig trenches in the ground for the army.  
 
  
 
Along with [[Majestatis]], she was very good at managing the other unharnessed dragons. Because of that she got an epaulette and the rank of captain.
