Biography

Arthur Hammond is a young man, about twenty years old, who is well-versed in Chinese culture. For that reason, he is deputized by the Ministry and sent with William Laurence and Temeraire when they travel to China in Throne of Jade. His job is to restore relations between the two countries, which often puts him at odds with Laurence who wants nothing more than to remain Temeraire's captain.

Hammond is described as having "untidy dark hair and a great intensity of expression that lent his thin, sallow face an illuminated quality" (TOJ 66).
