Biography

Because of his familiarity with Chinese culture, Arthur Hammond was deputized by the Ministry and sent with William Laurence and Temeraire on their journey to China. He was approximately twenty years old at the time.

Hammond's job was to restore relations between Britain and China, which often put him at odds with Laurence, who wanted nothing more than to remain Temeraire's captain.

Hammond had untidy dark hair and a thin, sallow face.

After securing Laurence's addoption into the Chinese Imperial family, he was further able to acquire a permanent residence in the Capital for Laurence's use. This allowed Hammond to remain in China indefinitely as Laurence's "guest" even after the departure of Temeraire and his crew for England.
