Biography[edit]
Battersea was a midshipman aboard the HMS Reliant when she captured the Amitie and the egg that was to hatch Temeraire. As one of the Reliant's officers, he participated in the drawing of lots to determine which officer would attempt to harness the egg. Battersea was the only officer who was eager to try, thinking that it would be "famous" to ride a dragon. When he wrote down his name for the lots, he tore off a larger piece of paper than was really needed, perhaps in hopes of improving his chances of being chosen. However, the choice instead fell on his fellow midshipman, Carver.
