After kidnapping the Dutch representatives who had rowed out from the Dejima trading post to welcome the Ship, the Phaeton shows her true colours and her captain, Pellew, demands that the Japanese resupply the ship or else he would execute the Dutch representatives and destroy Chinese and Japanese shipping in the harbour. To accompany his threat, Captain Pellew has his crew fire muskets and the ships cannons. The Japanese Sui Riu, Lord Jinai, who is tasked with protecting the harbour, sinks the Phaeton in response.
