Species Notes[edit]

The Cossack (Ukrainian: козаки́, kozaky; Russian: казаки, kazaky) was a breed used by the Cossacks, a group of predominantly East Slavic people who became known as members of democratic, semi-military and semi-naval communities in southern Russia, to defend Russia against the attacks of Napoleon Bonaparte's French forces. They are similar to a Winchester in size.

Noted by Grig to be "irregulars" in terms of fighting, Grig also noticed that Cossack dragons were smaller than his own size. Captain William Laurence also noticed that Cossack dragons were "considerably smaller" than Grig, "the size of Winchesters, courier-weight beasts by British standards".

Nevertheless, Coassack dragons seemed well-cared for by the Cossacks, compared to their Russian Aerial Corps counterparts. Temeraire noticed that the Cossack dragons were tucked in around the campfire among the people, had neat harnesses, and wore handsome woven blankets.
