Biography[edit]
Colonel Eigher was in charge of an unnamed fort on the Austrian-Ottoman border. He assisted William Laurence in his flight from Istanbul back to Britain by providing a safe spot to rest.
He was a heavy drinker, but was considered a gentleman, although not of high estate or background, which limited his advancement. He seemed to be a rather competent soldier, assigned to a post below his ability.
He had served under General Langeron in the Battle of Austerlitz and was distraught over the Austrian loss, followed by the peace treaty between Austria and France.
