Elsie is not yet full grown when she met William Laurence. She and Captain Hollin were assigned to courier duty. Hollin was assigned to Elsie, over Jeremy Rankin, who treated his dragon, Levitas, with disrespect even while he was dying.
She grew up to be large for a Winchester, because Hollin knew the proper diet for the breed better than most captains.
Elsie was given a decorated plate, coloured blue, red and silver, by a Miss Jemson; the daughter of the Mayor of a town that Elsie, Hollin and Lawrence stopped at in their search for Temeraire. She and Hollin both expressed a hope that they would see each other again.
