Biography

Evans was chosen as second lieutenant by William Laurence because of his many years of experience. However, Evans suffered a broken leg during the Valerie engagement and was sent back to England. Ferris became acting second lieutenant in his absence, but was not as experienced at in keeping the men in line, especially in the face of sailors' taunts and jibes.
