An open and friendly young man as well as a capable officer, Martin was selected by Capt. William Laurence as one of the midwingmen to serve aboard Temeraire.

Martin was wounded in the Valerie engagement as he journeyed to China with Temeraire and his crew in late 1805.  He was out of action for a time before returning to duty.  Unfortunately, he healed faster than the first lieutenant, John Granby.  In the absence of Granby and the second lieutenant, Evans, who had been returned to Britain with a broken leg, the crew were in charge of the third lieutenant, Ferris.  Ferris was too young and inexperienced to know how to tell the aviators to take no notice of the jibes of the sailors.  As a result, Martin got into an argument with naval midshipman Reynolds, who was on the point of making a challenge Martin could not answer when the armourer's mate Blythe knocked Reynolds down.  Blythe had to be severely flogged for striking an officer, for which Martin felt extremely guilty.

Martin was one of the ten crew members chosen to accompany Temeraire and Laurence to Peking, along with Granby, Keynes, Riggs, Therrows, Hackley, Dunne, Blythe, Willoughby and Digby.  (Emily Roland and Peter Dyer also went, on George Staunton's advice. In Africa, Martin was one of the party captured by Kefentse and his warriors and taken to Mosi-oa-Tunya, along with Laurence, Harcourt, Chenery and others. Lily made it possible for the humans to escape by burning hand- and footholds in a sheer cliff for them with her acid. Since Laurence was still recovering from a severe flogging, Martin helped him down the cliff, guiding his feet to each foothold.

After Laurence's treason, Martin was transfered to Orchestia and met Temeraire's attempts to get him to rejoin his crew with disdain.

Martin is still young and has blonde hair. He does not like his first name.

When Laurence was convicted of treason in late 1807, all of Temeraire's crew members were reassigned.  Martin was assigned to Orchestia.  Laurence - technically still under a death sentence - and Temeraire rejoined the Aerial Corps during Napoleon's occupation of Britain, but when Temeraire saw Martin in camp and greeted him, Martin pointedly ignored him.  It is not known whether he actually disdained Laurence for his act of treason or whether he acted in this way to protect his own future in the Aerial Corps, especially since Ferris had already been broken out of the Corps because he was thought to have abetted Laurence.
