Jonathan Carver was the young midshipman chosen by lot to attempt to harness the dragonet later named Temeraire. This was an unfortunate turn of events, because although Carver was considered by Laurence to be a "promising young officer" by naval standards, he was afraid of heights. This would have been a serious handicap to him as an aviator.

Fortunately for Carver, Temeraire paid no attention to him and instead addressed Laurence.
