Jonathan Carver

Jonathan Carver is the young midshipman chosen by lot to harness Temeraire's egg. He is afraid of heights, which William Laurence thinks would make him a poor aviator. Luckily for Carver, Temeraire pays no attention to him and instead speaks to Laurence, leaving Carver to the Navy. Laurence considers him a "promising young officer."
