When Temeraire and his crew returned from China and learned of the [[Dragon Plague]] that was ravaging the British dragons, Keynes left [[Temeraire]]'s service to be of use to the sick dragons. As a senior surgeon, he could not justify remaining with one of the few healthy dragons left in Britain.  He was replaced by a younger surgeon, [[Dorset]].
