Biography[edit]
He was a diplomat and traveled to China in 1792 on the HMS Lion. He rejected to kowtow in the presence of the Qianlong Emperor because he thought this would be apostate or rebel. For the chinese the kowtow only was the courtly ceremonial. That's why his asking for a steady embassy and traiding exchange failed before the negotiations had begun. Some chinese dragons escorted him and his ship to the sea. For his diplomatic duty he became noble. He is still very known in China.
