Biography
Maximus (Latin for 'greatest') was a Regal Copper who was large even for his breed. His captain, Berkley, often grumbled about his size and how much he ate.
His dam was Laetificat. He was hatched at about the same the time as Temeraire, so they trained together and quickly became friends.
Upon returning to England, Temeraire was greatly shocked by Maximus' appearance. He had lost a great deal of weight upon contracting the dragon plague. According to Berkley's biased views, the Regal Coppers suffered the plague worse than the other dragons because losing so much mass made it difficult for them to breathe. Indeed, Maximus appeared to be the sickest of Lily's formation and was near death.
Maximus, along with the rest of Lily's formation, was sent to Africa aboard the HMS Allegiance to find a cure. Though Maximus was mainly silent, the dragons spent their nights listening to Laurence read to Temeraire. All the members of the formation soon begin having in-depth discussion on geometry, giving credence to Temeraire's assertions that all dragon's are very intelligent.
Like all Regal Coppers, Maximus was very farsighted.
