Biography

Minnow never accepted a captain, but lived in the Pen Y Fan Breeding Grounds until she left with Temeraire to fight the invading French army. In her opinion, being harnessed might have been fine for the larger dragons, but she had spoken with too many old couriers, broken down in health by the time their captains retired, with nothing to show for their service but the marks their harnesses had left on their hides.

Because of her disdain for being in harness, she accompanied Temeraire to the negotiations concerning pay for dragons to make sure the unharnessed ones would be treated fairly. Later on, she got the rank of captain and an epaulette.

At the Battle of Shoeburyness, Minnow landed on a Defendeur-Brave's back, snatched the French dragon's captain up and raced away with him for the British lines, effectively removing the larger dragon from combat. Temeraire, who had a quite different opinion of being in harness than Minnow did, could not help interpreting this as "stealing" the Defendeur's captain and made a mental note to keep Minnow away from Laurence, even though Temeraire had heard Minnow's opinion more than once.
