Pollitt was the ship's surgeon aboard the [[HMS Reliant]] at the time the [[Amitie]] was captured in early 1805.  He hailed from Derbyshire, where he had a wife and four children.  He became a naval surgeon fairly late in life, at the age of 30, "after some unspecifed disappointments on land".  He was genial and well-liked by the crew even though his hand was not always the steadiest at the operating table.

After the Reliant was badly dished in a gale after the [[Battle of Trafalgar]], her captain, [[Tom Riley]] was stuck on land until Laurence tipped him off to apply for the captaincy of the dragon transport [[HMS Allegiance]], which was to carry Laurence and Temeraire to China.

Pollitt hailed from Derbyshire and had a wife and four children.  He became a navy surgeon fairly late in life, at the age of 30.  He was genial and well-liked by the crews with whom he served, though at times he seemed to be rather oblivious to the crew's reactions to events.

Pollitt followed Riley into service on the Allegiance.  In particular, he was able to recommend the ship's biscuit that cured [[Liu Bao]]'s chronic sea sickness, leading to some thawing of relations between Liu Bao and Laurence.  Pollitt also lent Temeraire and Laurence some of his books for their amusement during the long journey.
