The ship's surgeon aboard the HMS Reliant at the time the Amitie was captured in early 1805.

He had a keen interest in dragons and some knowledge of their physiology. He owned or was familiar with several books on the subject, including Badke's Bestiary.

Pollitt also served as the surgeon onboard the HMS Allegiance during the journey to China with William Laurence and Temeraire.

Pollitt hailed from Derbyshire and had a wife and four children.
