The ship's surgeon aboard the HMS Reliant at the time the Amitie was captured in early 1805. Pollitt also served as the surgeon onboard the HMS Allegiance during the journey to China with William Laurence and Temeraire.

He had a keen interest in dragons and some knowledge of their physiology. He owned or was familiar with several books on the subject, including Badke's Bestiary.

Pollitt hailed from Derbyshire and had a wife and four children. He became a navy surgeon fairly late in life, at the age of 30. He was genial and well-liked by the crews with whom he served.
