Biography[edit]

An older midwingman and one of Temeraire's topmen. He and Macdonaugh, another topman, were briefly reassigned to Maximus when Maximus' crew was short after the Battle of Dover and Temeraire had been pulled out of action due to the demands of the Chinese embassy led by Prince Yongxing. However, after Lily's formation came to the aid of the HMS Allegiance during the Valerie engagement, Berkley gave Portis and Macdonaugh back to Laurence, as the William of Orange was carrying replacements for Maximus' crew.

Portis got into a bit of trouble when the crew reached Istanbul, a Muslim city where women were generally veiled if not secluded entirely. He, along with the riflemen Dunne and Hackley, had to be disciplined for acting over-excited over a veiled person, presumably a woman, they saw speaking with a palace official from a distance. Portis was assigned to dig Temeraire a fresh "necessary" and to fill it in again when Temeraire was done, while Dunne and Hackley were sent to assist the chief leatherworker, Mr. Bell.
