Chief armourer in Temeraire's ground crew, Pratt was known both for his quiet capability and his immense strength. He was ordered to perform the flogging of Dunne and Hackley in Istanbul, which he did with reluctance.
Pratt died in Africa in the summer of 1807, when the British party gathering mushrooms to cure the Dragon Plague was attacked by Kefentse and his warriors. Pratt tried to get between Kefentse and Hannah Erasmus, and Kefentse "carved him to the hip."
