The Rankin family were nobles who had kept dragons on their own estate before the breeding and keeping dragons became the responsibility of the state. After the creation of the Aerial Corps it was customary for the third sons of the family to join them.
In an example of a common practice within the Areal Core, the dragon Celeritas was captained by two generations of Rankins. The third generation of the family would have been Jeremy Rankin, however Celeritas refused him as captain.
