Biography

Robert Maynard was convicted as a pick-pocket and sent to New South Wales. He was fat and often drunk. He was one of the convicts selected to clear a path through the Blue Mountains with the aviators of the Aerial Corps because he was a stonemason, but he rarely did his share of the work. Instead, he spent his time trying to get the others to give him their share of the rum by singing songs for them.

When a lightning ignited a brush fire in the desert, Maynard had snuck off with a cask of rum. As the flames grew closer, he attempted to rescue the liquor instead of running for the safety of Temeraire. As a result of waiting on him, Temeraire suffered smoke inhalation and burning in his throat. And Maynard had to abandon the rum or be killed. Afterward, the other convicts shunned him for a time.

When the party reached Larrakia, Maynard made inappropriate advances toward Tharunka's chief companion, Binmuck, so she struck him with a log from the fire.
