The Shen-lung was an extremely common breed of dragon. Many superior Chinese dragons originated from this breed, in a design similar to the British Yellow Reaper. As their appearance and size varied greatly, it is difficult to give a precise description of their appearances, but their blue-grey coloring seemed to be their main common point. They usually wore colored silk collars showing their ranks.
Like humans, some Shen-lung were clever and some were lazy. They worked at a wide variety of occupations, providing mass transit for humans, carrying freight, nursemaiding dragonets and entering the civil service. The wisest were sometimes granted the privilege of mating with an Imperial.
The name means "Spiritual Dragon", probably in the sense of "dragon with a mind" or "dragon with a soul" rather than "dragon who holds seances." Jing shen means "spirit, mind, consciousness, thought, mental, psychological, essence."
