Is the Reliant a ship of the line? On the first page of HMD, the 36 gun Amitie is referred to as being "slightly outgunned" by the Reliant (a third-rate ship of the line would have at least 64 guns). I'm not recalling a specific mention, though...
I don't think so. I think, 30 more guns is more than "slightly." But I can't find another reference. I think the Reliant wasn't meant for heavy combat, but capturing French vessels, which would mean it couldn't be weighed down that much. Ahhh -- Adm. Croft says -- talking about Gibbs and Riley's promotions -- that "there aren't so many fine frigates." So I'm going to assume for the moment that's what they both are.
