== Important Note Re Spam and Vandalism, and New Accounts ==

As you may have noticed, we've had a terrible problem with spam and vandalism lately.  To combat this, from now on, accounts need to be added to an "approved" group before they can actually edit any pages.

I've gone through the list of users (most of which are spam/vandal accounts, sadly) and added everyone I recognized or with a user profile to the approved group. Aha!  To have characters sort in the category pages by last names, enter the categories like so:

The listing will still show up as "William Laurence" but it will appear under L instead of W.

== Questions to consider ==

One thing we need to sort out fairly quickly is the question of page references.  I'd prefer to avoid them as much as possible -- for one thing, there are already at least three printed editions of the books out there, not to mention the numerous digital ones, and pagination is going to differ in each.

I'd rather paraphrase than use direct quotes, but if a direct quote is, on rare occasion, needed, we can use a chapter reference rather than page.  It's less specific, but at least it will be accurate for all present and future editions.

For another thing, I'd rather take a "historical" approach, rather than a literary one... by that I mean treat this Wiki as if we're writing about real people, places and events, rather than literary characters.  So instead of "character x died in ToJ" -- character x died in an engagement over the Channel with the French in early 1806" or whatever.  

In that same vein, let's use past tense, both for consistency and to keep the "historical" feeling.

Comments?  These aren't alterations that need to be made right away; we can edit things as we go.

I'm an English major so I'm obviously the one taking the literary approach here. I've had it drilled into my head that quoting or paraphrasing without a citation is plagiarism so I'm kind of iffy on that. And as you can see from all the page references I made over the weekend, I'm a big fan. I just thought people would want to be able to go see for themselves, especially if there is more information contained therein that we're not saying.

I like the "historical" approach more because I find it more immediate, and that it immerses you in the world.  But I still think we need to use past tense verbs -- basically, the conceit is we're writing about things that have already happened.

As much as possible,  I'd prefer not to do references at all, and keep quotes to an absolute, utter minimum, when there's just no other way to say something, which I think will be rare.  So I don't think there's anything wrong with physical descriptions, say, being paraphrased -- there are only so many ways to say someone is tall with dark hair :) and I don't think any reference is necessary for that kind of thing.  

Otherwise, where do we draw the line?  Do we need references for everything?  That's kind of a nightmare, and if something like the Encyclopedia of Arda (LotR) can do without them, I think we can too.  If an issue comes up about whether something is correct, I think the Talk pages are a perfect place to discuss, list references, and see where everybody is coming from.  I understand the English-major tendency, and I share it to a large degree, but I think we want to keep this accurate -- but at the same time fun, and something people want to work on.

I think, when references are necessary, it will have to be chapters, unless there's some way to reconcile the page number problem in all the different editions, and I don't think there is.

We seem to be at an impasse then. The only other two encyclopedia type sites I've worked with are http://www.towerofthehand.com/ and  http://www.hp-lexicon.org.  I was actually thinking, since you mentioned it, it would ultimately be better to do the references similarly to the way HP Lexicon does, with a chapter date since editions change. 

But I was keeping page numbers on the Temeraire crew page so I could go back and add individual pages for them later.

I'm not sure what to say, then -- I just feel like requiring that would be too cumbersome, and having it in some places and not others is just inconsistent and unhelpful.  I have no problem in whipping out references on a Talk page if something is disputed, but having them all over the place... I'd rather not. 

I'm not going to go through and massively delete them, for now, especially if you find it helpful in developing other content, but in the medium-long term, I'd like to see them diminish.  Notes can be kept indefinitely as entries on Talk pages, especially for details that might be hard to find -- does that help address your concerns?

It's just, when you emailed me about this project, one of the reasons I thought it'd be a great idea was because when I was when disucssing in a fandom or writing fanfic, I'm always struggling to find where I saw information. And I use those other sites you mentioned as an index ''as well as'' a referesher if I forget who people are. But that's just my approach, I can see that you want something different now. And I understand what you're saying about referencing everything, because at some point people ought to just pick up the books themselves. Perhaps if, in our ever expanding timeline section, we kept like a summary of what happens in each chapter, so people would know where to find things. I like the idea of some reference to where the information comes from. Taking on board the different editions issue, perhaps book and chapter references is the way to go. As a regular [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Phil_Boswell Wikipedian], I would obviously like to have everything properly attributed.
As to the question of pages vs chapters, I haven't seen the US editions, but it would surprise me if the pagination were to prove identical; this would also apply to different editions from the same country.
If the books are translated into other languages this difficulty would obviously increase.
I would therefore prefer to use chapter references.

If it were '''possible''' to use numbered paragraphs, that would be optimal, but there's such a thing as taking a good idea too far ;-)

On the question of US vs UK editions, I would make a plea that all information from ''[[Black Powder War]]'' be clearly demarcated, since this book hasn't yet been published here in the UK.

Phil, I appreciate the sentiment, but as our approach is historical, rather than literary, it raises two problems -- one is of the differing versions and pagination (different editions in the US, UK and Australia, the omnibus of books 1-3, and at least three electronic editions) and the other is the way it would interrupt the narrative type of encyclopedia entries we are striving for to include constant references.  Also, at this point, going back and attempting to track down every reference would be incredibly time consuming.

We've been using the Talk pages for obscure references and such, and explanations of information that's been deduced from numerous sources (e.g., [[Laurence]]'s age) -- I can't really see a better way to handle it. I figured the dictionary link was most likely to be used in text, while the others are for "External Link" sections or metapages, and included the target word only.  And if you don't like this method, the manual external link method will still work.

== Spoilers ==

I know that as the wiki is based on books that people may not have read and avoiding spoilers for every potential viewer is all but impossible. One thing I would like to suggest though is removing the spoilers that have been posted for book 4. Whether these come from information elsewhere on the web, or from reading's taken from the next unpublished book, they can be quite distressing if you didn't want to see it. And even just seeing the spoiler warning can tell you plenty.

Is it possible to keep the information on the wiki soley to the published work? Backing out information like that on [[Obversaria]]? == Categories ==
Currently there are categories for types of things, i.e. individual dragons, people, dragon breeds, battles (see [[Special:Categories]] ).  "People" have subcategories of their nationality (Chinese, British, French).   And similarly, "Military" has subcategories of "British Military" and "French Military".  I would like to add to this so that people can cross-browse between French dragons, French people, and French dragon breeds.  It is unclear at present, but I would clarify nationality as birth nationality.  

Perhaps more controversially, but in the spirit of Temeraire himself, I would propose that "People" be expanded to include both dragons and humans.  I think he would be disturbed to not find dragons among his list of people.  Subcategories of "People" could be "Dragons" and "Humans".  At least, there should be some category which spans both dragons and humans as sentient beings, though it could be something other than "People".

Uh, I think "people" pretty clearly refers to humans, not dragons.  I think calling dragons people, which they are clearly not, would be dreadfully confusing.   Temeraire does not call people dragons or dragons people.  So, really, I would say no to that.  I think keeping People and Dragons as separate categories is a logical use of categorization.

In general, I do not have a problem with adding categories if they're needed and will be truly helpful to users in finding things, but every time we do so, it creates a considerable amount of work, and IMO, that time could better be spent, at this point, in writing articles.  But if we do add dragons and dragon breeds by nationality, are you volunteering to go back through all existing articles and update them with the appropriate categories?  

I am still concerned by this notion of categorizing dragon breeds by nationality.  It seems to be an area ripe for confusion.  The nation where a breed originated may have ceased to exist -- what if we get a dragon that was originally domesticated by the Romans?  Well, "Italy" is kind of misleading, because "Italy" was not a nation-state at the time.  "Roman Empire Dragons" indicates little geographically speaking, considering the size of it, and is basically useless information.   Where do the ferals go?  What about cross-breeds?   If we were going to do this, I would prefer it to be in a manner that indicates *geography* rather than nationality, which is a political identifier rather than a geographic one.  - [[User:Whitearrow|whitearrow]] 17:49, 29 January 2007 (PST)

Yes, I was volunteering to go back through existing articles and updating them with appropriate categories.  That was what I had been doing.  

As for the nationality question, the books generally classify breeds as French or British or Chinese, and usually that is the only thing we know about the origin of the breed.  Yes, there can be edge issues here, but the same is true for categorizing people as British, French, or Chinese.  What do we call a British subject of Chinese ancestry, or vice-versa?  For that matter, Laurence himself is both a member of the Imperial family of China and a British subject.  I don't think it's that big a deal to apply basic categories.

I noticed the main page now has the US pub date. It's no problem adding the info, but if we want spoiler warnings, we need to come up with a scheme for them beforehand, so they can easily be removed afterward, like putting them into their own category. == Clarification on Images ==

We're going to follow this policy on uploadng images to the wiki.

You may upload an image if:

1) You have created it (drawn, rendered, whatever) yourself.  (Scanning artwork by someone else doesn't count as "created.")

2) You have talked to either myself or [[user:strangerface|strangerface]] about it.  If you write us about an image you've found on the web, please include the URL of the page where you found it.

If it's clearly a public domain image, we'll have no problem with you uploading it.  If it's not, or the artist hasn't granted permission (like a CC license) to use the image elsewhere, it probably won't be allowed here.

Thanks for your help.  We know that it would be great to have more pages with images, but we can't do it unless it's something we're allowed to use.

It may seem like busy work, but it really does help -- it makes it much easier for those who just want to do the writing part.

If you are one of those "I just want to write, and I can't do any wiki markup but a simple link" people, the place for you to check is [[:Category:Articles to be expanded]].  Pick one that's of interest and write your little heart out.

Please do not spend your time, for the moment, trying to reorganize categories or do anything administrative -- our focus should be on expanding the content.

On editing the historical figures - do we want to link in with wikipedia for each of them?  I've noticed wiki links in the body of some biographies, but only to other people mentioned in the body. Editing the main page doesn't seem to be open to everyone at the moment. In any case, it should be updated to move [[Empire of Ivory]] into "The Story So far" and it could even put "Victory of Eagles" into Empire's current place. Can someone place a link to this on the main page? At the moment, it's an orphaned page (no other pages link to it on the wiki), but it contains links to the wiki pages for all the canon material (the six novels, and the short stories published elsewhere). It won't let me add it; could someone with the proper wiki privileges fix that?

== Diagrams from back of first book ==

I was browsing the offical website, and in the galleries section it has the two diagrams from His Majesty's Dragon (picture links below);

Can we save these pictures to the wiki and use them for the Dragon Rigging and Dragon Breeds articles, respectively, or would that be a copyright breach? I also wonder if we should add them to the page for His Majesty's Dragon for the sake of readers outside of the US, because the images are not included in the UK edition (titled Temeraire - the appendices are intact but the pictures aren't. And on that matter, I think the map of Australia and Larrakia is missing from the UK edition, or at least it was at the Borders store I visited.). == Suggestion for cleaning up the Wiki ==

Okay, at the moment I'm going through the lists of Special Pages to fix all Orphaned and Dead-End Pages as simply as possible, but it strikes me that we do need to several more "group" pages. We have several pages detailing Draconic characteristics, but we don't have a central "Dragon" page for all of these to be linked to. 

In addition to this, we have thousands of pages mentioning historical figures that need to be cleaned up. We could continue as we currently are doing; where we make a page for the relevant historical figures and then add a sub-section detailing how history has changed, or we could group all historical figures into one large list, and handle things from there.

Alternatively, we could make a list for the historical figures who are only briefly mentioned, and include links to the pages of the major historical figures. Thoughts on this? [[User:Almaron|Almaron]] 00:17, 2 October 2010 (PDT)

== We need a countries portal - Opinions? ==

As time is going on, we're getting more and more information about the different regions of the world, and how they are changing. We've got a few pages at the moment that detail various regions of the world, such as the page for [[Europe]] and its countries, including a small page for [[Great Britain]], and the [[Tswana Kingdom]] page that details some of the sub-saharan tribal borders, but no page for China, Africa or Australia, the latter of which has now gained a complex trading network amongst the native tribes. There's too much information here that's not getting listed. I'd start typing up these pages but for one thing; I don't know where these pages should link back to. They could all link back to the Places category, I suppose, but I've also made this map of the world [http://www.temeraire.org/wiki/Image:Temeraire_Map.PNG] as it would have appeared in the series (based off historical notes and story events), and I think that could make a good starting point. Who is supposed to be maintaining the front page? Actually, has there been any activities at all since this Wiki has came online again?

Anyways here are a few updates I think should be made. Please feel free to add in whatever I have missed that you feel should be included as well:

- Indicate the upcoming finale "League of Dragons" after Blood of Tyrants, with a heading something along the line of "The Story Finale" or something like that.

- Blood of Tyrants is already released. Update that.

- Is it just me or is the sidebar dislocated?
