Majestatis strikes me as just as intelligent as Perscitia or Temeraire, but quieter about it.  For example, at Loch Laggan, they both figure out that there's a piece of ground outside the walls that's going to be just as warm as the ground inside the walls, but less competed for.  Perscitia doesn't immediately realize that Majestatis knows this and tries to get him to move so she can have it to herself.  When she finds out that he's figured out the same thing she has, she's surprised.  Typically, Majestatis tells her that he's happy to share if she wants to stay and then precludes further argument by going to sleep.

I think Majestatis is how Temeraire *might* have turned out if he'd been harnessed by someone less intelligent and intellectually honest than Laurence.  Laurence would never think to ask the questions that Temeraire does, but once they're asked, he's too honest to duck them, he feels compelled to try and answer.  Another captain might have said, "Enough with the questions, shut up and fly your formation patterns already!"  Eventually, Temeraire would have gotten bored with him and "mislaid" him.

Okay, does anyone besides me not understand the 'mislaying' of Majestatis' captain? I didn't really understand it in the book, but I did think it was funny. Please explain- Laurelhach 08:21, 28 September 2008 (PDT)

What I gathered was that Majestatis disliked his captain, so he dumped him into a water trough and left him there. Since the guy presumably didn't remain in the trough, Majestatis had no idea where he'd got to and therefore said he'd "mislaid" the guy.

Majestatis strikes me as just as intelligent as Perscitia or Temeraire, but quieter about it. For example, at Loch Laggan, both Majestatis and Perscitia figure out that there's a piece of ground outside the walls that's going to be just as warm as the ground inside the walls, but less competed for.
