I thought i read somewhere that the Valerie had 300 men. But I cannot find the reference and hesitate to give a number if I am not certain. Yes, that's what you read.
Immediately after the sinking, Laurence is described as silent and dismayed at the loss of "three hundred men, perhaps more."
