Biography
At the beginning of His Majesty's Dragon, Riley is second lieutenant to Capt. William Laurence. Riley had been with Laurence since he was a midshipman, and he and Laurence have a good relationship. Had it been up to Laurence, Riley would have been his first lieutenant rather than Gibbs.
As Gibbs had been assigned to take the Amité into port, Riley is the ranking officer on the Reliant when Temeraire is hatched, and Laurence brevets him to captain.
He has fair, freckled skin, and tends to telegraph his emotions on his face.
