Along with the Chanteuse and a Fleur-de-Nuit, the Valerie attacked the HMS Allegiance under the cover of night while it was journeying to China. The Allegiance was outgunned and outnumbered and was in great danger of being taken, until Temeraire used the Divine Wind against the Valerie, and she capsized and sank in the wave that followed. The entire complement of 300 was lost. (See Valerie engagement.)

The Valerie's sinking, along with the arrival of Lily's formation, took the heart out of the Chanteuse's crew, and they surrendered.
