Biography

Dulcia (a name derived from the Latin 'sweet') is a more experienced dragon who has been put in Lily's formation along with Messoria and Nitidus to balance out the inexperienced Lily, Temeraire and Maximus.

Dulcia is also afflicted with the dragon plague, but along with the rest of Lily's formation, is sent to Africa aboard the HMS Allegiance to find a cure. William Laurence spends the evenings reading to Temeraire from his books and is surprised to find that all the dragons quickly comprehend geometric theory. At one point, Nitidus and Dulcia disagree with Temeraire on the concept of parallel lines. (Though Dulcia is more tactful in her disagreement than Nitidus.) Indeed, all the members of the formation soon begin having in-depth discussion on geometry, giving credence to Temeraire's assertions that all dragons are very intelligent.

After Harcourt, Chenery, Laurence and their crews are captured and taken to Mosi-oa-Tunya, Lily, Dulcia and Temeraire fly in search of them and find them. Temeraire first attempts to rescue the humans by himself. After he is captured, Lily and Dulcia rescue both him and the humans. Because of her size and colouring, Dulcia is able to slip in unnoticed among the African dragons to send Laurence notice to be ready for the rescue.
