Biography

Lily hatched five years early. Harcourt barely had time to reach her before she broke the shell, thus she had no time to think of a name and "Lily" was the first thing that popped into her head.

She appeared savage because of the bones by her mouth, used for spraying acid. She was actually a very proper dragon. She liked being clean and she did not curl up with other dragons (the way some smaller ones will want to sleep ontop of larger ones) because it was "beneath her dignity".

Lily was very accurate with her spray; she could destroy targets from 400 feet above.

When moving between coverts, Lily and her formation were attacked by French dragons. Lily was very badly injured by a dragon believed to be Triumphalis and only survived by the combined efforts of the rest of the formation, especially Temeraire. They were finally rescued by Excidium's formation.

Afterward, Lily was not well enough to fly for some time. Around this period, Jean-Paul Choiseul attempted to kidnap her and Harcourt. This attempt was foiled by William Laurence.

Lily was in full health by the Battle of Dover. She fought well during this engagement, even at one point hitting a French dragon full in the face with her spray. At the end, she is one of only two dragons (the other being Obversaria) who are well enough to protect Temeraire while he employs the Divine wind against the enemy.

Like Maximus, Lily became friends with Temeraire after he joined her formation. The three of them, being the youngest of the formation, had a particular bond. They would often go to the lake to bathe together. Temeraire was particularly sad to leave Lily and Maximus whenhe traveled to China. He last saw Lily when she was playing aerial tag with Maximus.

When Temeraire returned, he first encountered Lily in the sandpit while fighting Sauvignon. Upon learning there might be a cure, Jane Roland sent Lily's formation to Africa aboard the HMS Allegiance to find it. The trip was difficult for Lily, who had to avoid spitting acid on the ship when she coughed or sneezed. At one point, her tub of sand fell off the ship and she was forced to stick her head over the side to avoid injuring anyone.

Laurence spent the evenings on the ship reading to Temeraire from his books. The other dragons became interested as well and started wanting books of their own. Harcourt was able to convince Lily to eat more (and get healthy) by promising her books of her own. After finding the cure Lily got better and along with Temeraire rescued the aviators from Mosi-oa-Tunya.

She fought during Napoleon’s invasion taking part in skirmish above Folkestone, cutting off French supply lines and serving in the Battle of Shoeburyness.
